SERVICES: Analysis, Research, and Development Services
Weather Radar Signature Research, Identification, and Development
Past examples include:
- Recognized the potential of Doppler radar to improve the detection
and warning of severe weather.
- Designed and developed much of the Next Generation Weather Radar
known as the WSR-88D and its operational network of Doppler radars
for our nation. This important contribution to our nation was recognized
by the American Meteorological Society.
- Made the first observations of a tornadic storm with dual Doppler
radars on 20 April 1974. This allowed for the mapping of the kinematic
structure of a tornadic storm at several altitudes.
- Pioneering studies resulted in discovery of the severe thunderstorm
wake vortex, the occlusion of the mesocyclone, the Tornadic Vortex
Signature, the Deep Convergence Zone, the development of the Lemon
Technique, etc.
- Developed operational severe thunderstorm, hail, and tornado signature
recognition criteria now in use around the world.
- Refined and built new conceptual models of severe storms including
the supercell and the pulse sever storm. These conceptual models have
led to improved forecasting and warnings of tornadoes, damaging winds,
and hail.
Weather Radar Graphic Product Design
- Design Radar Graphic Products while maintaining data quality, accuracy,
and information content.
- Design effective radar and convective storm analysis techniques.
- Designed the first generation products for the WSR-88D some of which
are still in use today.
Weather Radar Algorithm Derivation
- Carefully and professionally investigates weather radar
data, extracting scientific and meteorologically meaningful patterns,
and developing rule-based algorithms.
- Designed the Lemon Technique, automated by the Canadian
weather services.
- Designed the Three-body Scatter Spike (TBSS) use for operational
severe hail identification.
- Designed Bird Detection algorithms for international customers
using weather radars.
- Carefully and professionally iInvestigates weather radar data extracting
scientific and meteorologically meaningful patterns developing rule
based algorithms.
Weather Radar Program Management
Management of weather radar programs. Past examples include:
- Sperry Weather Radar Operations Compatibility Assurance
Manager for three years.
- Unisys and Lockheed Martin, Manager, Weather Systems Development,
Chief Meteorologist, and NEXRAD Program Control Manager for 10 years.
- Managed an R&D contract for Unisys with Florida State
University for 3 years.
Weather Radar Design from a Meteorologist's Perspective
- Provides Doppler Radar Development services.
- Provides Design and Development services and design critiques
for Surveillance Weather Radars, Microburst Detection Radars, and
Tropospheric Wind Profiler radars.
