Shark's Fin Sunset

Shark's Fin Sunset

An unusual annular solar eclipse swept across the western sky of the Texas South Plains region in May 2012, and Rich Thompson and I were there to witness the spectacle. The eclipse wasn't yet finished by sunset time, creating this rarely photographed effect of the shark-fin shaped solar segment at sunset. Our last view of the sun that day was a pointed tip! The shot below shows the scene just a few minutes prior. For more images, including a photo composite and a javascript time-lapse movie from this spectacular event, I've set up a dedicated website elsewhere on this server.
