Moon through Anvil

Moon through Anvil

One fine evening in Scotts Bluff National Monument, after presumably its last lightning activity, a weakening supercell floated overhead, its anvil translucent to the waxing moon. The surrounding landscape of sandstone and ash bluffs took on the blended hue of refracted moonlight from above and town lights of Scottsbluff and Gering, reflected off the clouds. Thinking the storm was merely a carcass, we went back to our motel a few miles away, only to discover later that it somehow had resurrected itself long enough to drop hail around 1.75 inch in diameter just a few miles to our north, in Scottsbluff.
