A lightning-started wildfire in early September 2000 spread to within two miles of Devils Tower and threatened several campgrounds. In the process, it rendered this tree a shrunken stump of charcoal-coated pulpwood, but also cleared out underbrush and "weed trees," leading to new habitats large and small. According to various news accounts, about 80 climbers had to be warned with bullhorns to get off the tower. Otherwise, they potentially could have been stranded indefinitely above a lake of flames licking at its base. This picture was taken almost two years after the fire.
