Colorado High Plains Supercell
The striated, high-based supercell is a Great Plains trademark. The drier, cleaner air masses on the high plains keep low- and middle-level obscuring clouds from forming, stripping storms down to their sculpted, skeletal splendor. A later view of the same storm has a spaceship-like appearance (below), associated with more stable, stratified air being lifted into the circulation of the storm.
