The muddy, still waters of Everglades National Park's brackish Eco Pond hosted a beautiful American crocodile when I visited in winter 2010. Fortunately, the croc and I reached an amicable truce: I would get no closer to it, and vice versa. This is when a zoom lens definitely proves worthwhile. Oneof my favorite parts of this scene is the three manifestations of the beast's toothy outer jaws, thanks to the water's reflections and late-afternoon sunshine: the real thing, the mirror image and the shadow.
