This situation probably isn't what the utility company desired when planting the pole in this location. Downstream from the pole, at right, eddies called Von Kármán vortices swirled in the water. Such vortex development happens at every scale of fluid motion, gas and liquid, when the fluid is forced around a fixed obstacle in the flow stream. We see them regularly in fields of thick, oceanic low clouds downstream from mountainous islands, such as Guadalupe Island off Baja California.
