From one corner of North America to another, the vitality and importance of water is just as great. This deep freshwater pool in the midst of the Florida Everglades may have a bottom below sea level, though hydraulic pressure from the flow across the vast marshes keeps salt water from reaching this far inland. This water is some of the most disputed and contentious anywhere because it serves many masters: agriculture upstream around Lake Okeechobee, ecology here and downstream in Florida Bay, recreation everywhere in between, and a strip of thirsty coastal cities to the east.
