Bluestem Encased
A small roadside field of native big bluestem grass, formerly the dried up stalks of the previous summer's growth, stands coated with ice. Extrapolate this scene out to truly grand scale -- many square miles -- and one gets a sense of how ice storms looked on the Great Plains before they were plowed and settled.
