Tall Spark Reflected
The branching cloud-ground strike penetrated miles of cloud-free air between a mass of low clouds and the middle-upper levels of a deep storm tower. Seeing this brought my thoughts back to another fantastic strike across clear air over 21 years before. I don't get photos of such strikes very often, and this one was special for the reflections off gently rippled lake water as well. An observer under those low clouds only could see that relatively puny segment of the channel between that cloud base and the ground. Next time you are under a thunderstorm and witness a lightning bolt, ask, "How far up and away did that strike really travel?"
