Night Storm Coming
Another thunderstorm that I originally targeted for lightning photography retreated eastward and weakened, leaving a separate band of storms heading in from the west. Most of the time in this area, low clouds or precipitation impede good viewing of lightning from the front side of such complexes, much more so than from the retreating parts. Another important consideration: the storm is approaching the observer--not ideal when dealing with lightning! Yet the rumbling grew louder, the flashes brighter, until one of the responsible discharges found a sufficiently translucent part of the core to be clearly visible. As a bonus, a small collection of crawler lightning flickered nearly overhead. Soon it was time to pack up and ride out the welcomed rain.
