Lake McConaughy Dam Release
During a time of high water levels--drowning shoreline trees that grew during the preceding drought--the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District unleashed excess water from the dam of Lake McConaughy. After passing through a hydroelectric generator, the arching torrent offered a spectacular sight and booming water noise seldom associated with the American Great Plains. The 35,700 acre reservoir was constructed around 1940 along the North Platte River.
