Spitting Image

The striking and beautiful contrast at this time of day, between the vivid blue of the water and the beige-tan spit of sand, compelled me not only to compose some photographs of the scene, but to sit still for a few minutes and imagine the sand's formation and movement through the years. In the foreground is lake Superior, in the background, the Michipicoten River. The sand spit at the mouth of the river shifts hither and yon with the action of waves and river flow, but helps to shelter the areas upstream from heavy surf when the "gales of November" send the big waves crashing in.
