Oklahoma Convective Sunset
Framed by limp flags, the deep, roiling tumult of the storm towers high above belied the calmness of surface wind. Layers and chunks of cloud material behind the scene intercepted portions of the light from the setting sun, casting shadows on large parts of the convective pile that, in turn, were set aglow in more subtle ways by secondary light reflected off those towers that basked in direct sunshine. Meanwhile, lower level scud clouds displayed colorful light, cast from several directions at once after asssorted paths of reflection and refraction from a single ultimate source. The richly chaotic complexion of this scene came and went all too briefly, as atmospheric and astronomical forces flung a window of opportunity open then shut within a few score of heartbeats.
