Drought in Oklahoma
Maybe this falls under the category, "(Lack of) Water Works." Cracked, red sandy clay, sprouting scrubby weeds with burs, symbolize well an Oklahoma dry spell that depleted impoundments and promoted hundreds of thousands of acres of destructive wildfires. The rain deficit over the previous two and a half years had reached a full year's worth of normal precipitation here (about 35 inches). Some of these cracks reached over eight inches below the bed of a pond that had been overflowing just a couple years before.
