Snowy Sooner Woods
This tranquil scene of still chill is common in much of the deciduous forest of the Midwest and Northeast every winter. In the Sooner State's stream-watered ribbons of cottonwood, post oak and blackjack, though, it is a novelty. The quick, powdery four inches of snow fell from a "clipper" disturbance in northwesterly flow -- a type of winter storm uncommon this far south and west but quite frequent from the Dakotas to Ohio.
