Halos may develop as sunlight is refracted through billions of tiny ice crystals present in thin layers of cirrostratus. The contrail slicing across the sky far above, and the openness of the plains around the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, imparted a three-dimensional sense of grandeur to the moment.
