Spiral Stress Fractures...in Ice
First, a freezing rain episode left a thick veneer of ice on the tree trunk. Then wind forces on the tree bent the flexible trunk underneath the less-flexible ice, on multiple occasions, causing the ice to crack in circular and often criscrossing patterns.
