Moonrise beneath Retreating Storm Complex

Lamar CO, 17 Jun 2011

Short animation of tripodded still imagery from a retreating thunderstorm cluster over southeast Colorado, near Lamar, shortly before 10 pm MDT, 17 Jun 2011. This storm produced heavy rain and reports of up to "golfball" sized hail in Lamar, though I saw nothing bigger than an inch anywhere in town. Still, its eastward retreat was a spectacular experience with profuse lightning. As a bonus, the moon is visible rising "under" cloud base at lower right, and faintly lights up some distant high clouds at upper right. Please excuse the slight jump in the middle of the loop (accidentally kicked tripod and had to reset).
Use the controls above the images to stop, start, step forward and backward, and change loop speed.
