On several occasions we have journeyed through the Hill Country to partake of its scenic rolling terrain, great German food and barbecue, and of course, its beautiful dislays of springtime wildflowers. Most of those were relatively dry years, with patches of amazing and diverse flora, but never the bountiful carpets of color found in tourist books and galleries of those photographers fortunate enough to catch the good seasons. After several drought years, along came a cold and very wet autumn and winter for those parts, followed by a mild early spring: ideal conditions for what many locals called the most spectacular flower season in decades. We had to go! The explosion of wildflowers was comparable only to what we had seen a few years before in a shorter visit to Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains, but even more colorful and much larger in scale.
