Tornado near Hiko, NV, 31 Aug 0

Tornado West of the Rockies

Although the tornado hazard is lower west of the rockies, as illustrated in Harold Brooks' statistical threat maps, a few do strike every year in parts of the intermountain West and Great Basin. This tornado was sighted for a few minutes from a supercell near Hiko, Nevada. It is still a mystery how many tornadoes really occur in sparsely populated stretches of the West, where roads, towns and storm spotters are often located far out of sight of the bases of many thunderstorms.
