Long ago, children from nearby ranches rode here on horses and buses for their daily lessons, bells ringing, shuffling of little feet across wooden floors, "yes ma'ams" and the clackety-clack of chalk on the board, all mere memories for any of them who survive today. Now the sounds within go unheard--prairie wind, and the occasional pounding of rain, hail and thunder as a severe storm like this passes overhead. The old schoolhouse, American-built with pride, stubborn in its sturdiness, now stands inevitably destined to the dust.
