As the moon rose beneath a less-rainy part of the storm's base (lower right), the backside of the storm unleashed a fusillade of in-cloud and cloud-to-cloud lightning. The brightest channel's path of least resistance, from the cloud through clear air and back into the cloud, was far from direct!
