In 1883, Theodore Roosevelt first visited and admired the North Dakota badlands, and the Little Missouri River that drains and carves this amazing Northern Plains landscape. Among his many adventures as a rancher here was chasing boat thieves down this river using a makeshift craft of his own. [He caught them and took them to be jailed in Dickinson.] Today, those lands are part of a national park named after their champion.
