A recent flash flood eroded still more of the fragile clay and sand from the steep and exposed Badlands slopes, washing it through grass laid down in the torrent. With the earth soon dried to a crackling crust in the Dakota sun, the scene grew stark and harsh, but for one intrepid sunflower still tapping the moist mud deep underground.
