An astounding scene it was from within its own path: a tornado of obviously uncommon size and ferocity, moving away over what seemed open country, viewed across a remnant glacial lake strewn with small debris, beneath a surreal sky of early-sunset pastels diffused by wrapping rain. In that pre-smartphone era, we had no idea that the quarter-mile-wide vortex was fatally grinding down a small South Dakota town of the same width at this time--sobering and awful news seen that night at an Iowa motel. It became an event to remember and respect, but not celebrate, as we assisted with the damage survey the next day and listened to survivors.
