"Breaking Wave" Supercell

Seen by a few dedicated storm observers who stayed up late to catch the show, this legendary nighttime storm became known by many monikers devoted to its wild shape, including "Tsunami in the Sky" or my own phrase, in the title above. The apparent case of surfer's envy was a function not of a great wave aloft, but instead, the tilt of the storm and how surrounding winds and stability influenced the cloud structure. Still, real atmospheric waves channeled themselves along through a separate cloud deck at lower right, in a lower layer just above the surface, while a car's originally unwelcome headlights rendered an unusual foreground across plowed crop furrows. Surfing the wonders of the sky seldom has been as fascinating as on this night!
