Elusive in earlier trips to the Northwest coast, a suitably broken stratus deck (with no overlying clouds) finally timed just right to yield a scene I long desired to see and photograph: crepuscular-spotlit ocean waters from a lofty vantage point. High cliffs of the Olympic seashore offered just such a view. The different shapes of the sunlight-permitting cloud holes -- linear or slit-like in the background, patchy nearby -- offered just a fleeting moment of a splendidly symmetric progression of light and shadow, from near to far, across the proximal Pacific. Because of limited opportunity, I was nearly as excited about this catch as with some supercells on the Great Plains.
