One stormy summer night thirty years ago, I had spent half an hour taking nondescript, distant CG (cloud-to-ground) lightning pictures in the Osage Hills. Thunderstorms nearly surrounded the location; their anvils had melded together. From that cloud deck, a sudden explosion of aerial electric filaments filled the sky — including directly overhead. This Ektachrome slide, shot through a 50-mm lens, showed only a small fraction of the barrage. Of course, I vacated that hilltop vantage immediately!
