Better-known for the nearby waterfalls that make a stunning foreground accompaniment, the seaside mountain known as Kirkjufell also offers a wondrous array of looks in various light, views seldom photographed or fully appreciated in the short journey to the more famous vantages. This strange and dreamy perspective arose from standing directly across the bay, using a long zoom lens to focus on a small part of the mountain's steep east face, in midmorning sunlight somewhat mottled and diffused by thin, scuddy low clouds. These are just a small sample of the dozens of layers of sedimentary, pyroclastic, glacial and basaltic (lava) deposits stacked atop one another to construct Iceland's most iconic landform.
