Before sunrise, on a frigid late-winter's morning, a massive flock of birds fills the somber and steely skies above an icy cold Nebraska waterway. It's no ordinary river or bird gathering, either, but instead, the visible portion of tens of thousands of sandhill cranes, freshly launched from their overnight roosts on Platte River sandbars. Their haunting and primordial calls fill the air in a stereophonic multitude, individually nearly indistinguishable, yet collectively almost overpowering in magnitude.
