Platte River in the Twilight

Platte River in the Twilight

Just a short while earlier, we had enjoyed the flight of thousands of sandhill cranes and snow geese across a rainbow-decorated sky. After dealing with a rough weather day of cold wind, then late storms, followed by a cold front, the cranes didn’t arrive en masse for their river roosting until deeper into the twilight, when light levels were very low and photographing them airborne almost impossible. Still, this scene offered a congregation of light, shadow, color and texture that has held my fascination ever since. It is yet another example of how the unintended and unplanned can (and often should!) captivate the observer despite a different original agenda.
