Window to the Painted Desert

Unscreened windows at the old Painted Desert Inn offer a breezy summertime view across the vast, stark beauty of the northeastern Arizona landscape. The Inn, rebuilt in the 1930s Pueblo Revival Style of stuccoed adobe, earth-toned paints, thick walls, and log beams extending horizontally from flat roofs, hosts no overnight stays anymore. Still, it is open for shady respite and contemplation on its balcony -- and sometimes, ice cream.
