A balanced palette greeted me on this fine southern Utah afternoon, with white high clouds, blue sky, tall red cliffs, and arboreal greenery in the upper and lower foreground. These rock walls, over a thousand feet high, consist of the lighter Jurassic Temple Cap formation, underlain by the massive, thick, cliff-forming Navajo sandstone (also Jurassic). The Navajo formation developed from dunes in the largest sand desert known in Earth's history, covering what now are several western U.S. states.
